Diwali this year is a five-day celebration running from Dhanteras through Bhai Dooj. Each day carries its own ritual, its own significance, its own reason to have something special at home.

For Indian families abroad, this is the week they want to feel closest to home. And for families in India watching the festival approach, this is the week they most want to reach across the distance.

The Diwali gift box  packed in India, shipped internationally, unwrapped abroad  is how that reaching happens. This guide covers everything: what goes in the box, where to buy it, what customs will accept, how to time the shipment, and how to use Forward Parcel’s consolidation service to get everything there in one go.

The Five Days  And Why the Box Needs to Arrive Before Dhanteras

Diwali is not one day. It is five, each with its own mood and meaning:

Dhanteras opens the festival  the day of purchasing, of gold and silver and new things entering the house. Families abroad who receive a Diwali box before Dhanteras can open it on this day, which is exactly right.

Choti Diwali is the day of preparation  cleaning, decorating, setting the home for the main celebration.

Diwali  Lakshmi Puja is the heart of the festival. The main evening puja, the lighting of diyas, the sweets, the fireworks, the family gathered around the thali.

Govardhan Puja follows the next morning, and Bhai Dooj closes the sequence two days after Diwali  the sibling festival that brings the celebration full circle.

The implication for anyone sending a gift box from India: the box needs to arrive before Dhanteras, not on Diwali day itself. A box that arrives the evening of Lakshmi Puja is technically on time  but the family has already arranged their home, already set the thali, already done the puja without the diyas that were in transit. Aim for Dhanteras at the very latest. Aim for a few days before that if you want it to arrive comfortably.

What Goes in a Diwali Gift Box

A Diwali box is personal. What goes in it depends entirely on who is receiving it. But across thousands of Diwali shipments that pass through Indian forwarding warehouses every year, certain categories appear consistently  the things that make a Diwali box feel genuinely like Diwali, and that cannot easily be sourced abroad.

Diyas and home decoration

This is the item most families forget to send until too late. Terracotta diyas  the small, unglazed clay ones that are filled with ghee or oil and lit on Diwali night  are the centrepiece of the entire festival’s visual language. They weigh almost nothing, pack flat between layers of bubble wrap or soft cloth, and cost a fraction of what decorative diyas sold in Indian stores abroad command. A set of 50 diyas on Amazon India or Flipkart costs ₹100 to ₹300. The same set in a UK or UAE Indian store costs three to four times that.

Alongside diyas: rangoli colours, door torans (marigold-style fabric garlands for the door), brass or terracotta decorative lamps, and string lights with Indian motifs. All lightweight, all customs-safe, all available on Indian platforms.

Mithai and dry fruits

The festival’s food language. Commercially sealed Indian sweets  Haldiram’s kaju katli, Bikaji’s assorted mithai, Bikanervala boxes  travel internationally without customs issues when factory-labelled and sealed. The same applies to premium dry fruit assortments from brands like Happilo, Nutty Yogi, and Haldiram’s. For families who want to send something premium, a well-chosen dry fruit box  cashews, almonds, pistachios, figs, dried berries  is the modern Diwali gift that has largely replaced loose mithai in urban Indian households.

The one rule that cannot be broken: homemade sweets do not ship internationally. Unlabelled, unpackaged food  however lovingly made  will be held at customs at every major destination. Factory-sealed, commercially labelled, non-perishable only.

Puja essentials

For families who perform Lakshmi puja at home on Diwali night, the right items matter. A small Lakshmi-Ganesh idol in brass or clay, a puja thali with compartments for kumkum, haldi, roli, and akshat, agarbatti and dhoop in sealed packaging, a small kalash  all of this is available as a pre-assembled Diwali puja kit on Amazon India. Lightweight, compact, and the items that make a Diwali puja feel complete even in a flat in Manchester.

New clothes

New clothing on Diwali is tradition across every region of India. For families abroad, the specific request is almost always for Indian ethnic wear  a kurta set for the men, a salwar kameez or saree for the women, a lehenga for the daughter. Fabindia remains the most trusted source for cotton and silk festive kurtas that travel well, do not require heavy ironing after a week in transit, and look right for both the puja and the gathering afterwards. Meesho covers the budget-conscious end  kurta sets and salwar combos in the ₹400 to ₹800 range that allow a full family wardrobe at Indian prices.

A personal touch

Every person who receives a Diwali box from home says the same thing about it later: what they remember most is the letter inside. Not the packaging, not the packing tape, not even always the specific gift. The handwritten note, the photograph printed at a local shop and tucked between the diyas  this is the thing that lasts. It weighs nothing. It costs nothing to include. Pack it first.

What Customs Will Accept  By Destination

Different countries have different rules on what enters by international courier. Here is what matters for a standard Diwali box:

Item UAE UK USA Australia Canada Singapore

Sealed factory mithai and dry fruits Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes
Rangoli colours (sealed) Yes Yes Yes Check first Yes Yes

Puja thali and brass idols Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes
Ethnic clothing Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes
Homemade sweets or food No No No No No No

Australia deserves a specific note:
its biosecurity laws are among the strictest globally. Agarbatti containing natural plant resins, wood, or organic flower material can be flagged at the border. For Australia-bound boxes, use only well-known branded agarbatti in factory-sealed packaging with printed ingredient labels  avoid artisanal or loose incense entirely.

The golden rule across every destination: factory-sealed, commercially labelled, accurately declared. Customs officers are not looking to confiscate Diwali diyas  they are looking for unlabelled, undeclared, or prohibited items. A well-packed, accurately documented Diwali box clears customs at Dubai, Heathrow, JFK, and Sydney without drama.

The Shipping Timeline  What Is Still Possible

Diwali is November 8. Dhanteras  the opening day when the box ideally arrives  is November 6. That is 22 days from today.

Express courier from India to the UAE and Singapore takes 4 to 6 business days in transit. Add 2 to 3 days for customs clearance: boxes dispatched from Forward Parcel’s Hyderabad warehouse by October 28 arrive before Dhanteras at UAE and Singapore addresses.

To the UK, transit is 5 to 7 business days with similar customs clearance. Dispatch by October 26 for a comfortable pre-Dhanteras arrival.

To the USA and Canada, transit runs 6 to 8 business days. Dispatch by October 24 to 25 is the safe window.

To Australia, where biosecurity checks add time, dispatch by October 22 to 23 is advisable for pre-Diwali arrival.

Working backwards from those dispatch dates  accounting for the time needed to order items, receive them at the Forward Parcel warehouse, review photos, and approve consolidation  orders need to be placed on Indian platforms this week and next week, not in late October.

A box dispatched on October 30 to Australia is very likely a post-Diwali delivery. A box dispatched on October 22 arrives in time for Dhanteras.

The practical summary:

Destination Safe Dispatch Deadline Expected Arrival
UAE / Singapore October 28 Before Dhanteras (Nov 6)
UK October 26 Before Dhanteras (Nov 6)
USA / Canada October 24–25 Before Diwali (Nov 8)
Australia October 22–23 Before Diwali (Nov 8)

How Forward Parcel Makes It Work

Every order placed to your Forward Parcel Hyderabad warehouse address  from Amazon India, Flipkart, Meesho, Fabindia, JioMart, or any other Indian platform  lands in one place regardless of which seller it came from.

The warehouse team photographs every item on arrival. Before you authorise a single rupee of international shipping, you see the diyas, the mithai box, the kurta, the puja thali  all photographed and uploaded to your dashboard. If something is wrong  the wrong colour kurta, a cracked idol, an incorrect product  it is returned within India before the box is sealed. No surprises after the shipment lands.

Once everything is confirmed, you request consolidation, choose your courier  DHL, FedEx, or UPS  from the available options in your dashboard, and approve the shipment. Forward Parcel generates the complete customs documentation. One tracking number covers the entire box from Hyderabad to your family’s door.

A Diwali box that travels well is one that was planned a week early, not the night before the deadline. The festival is November 8. The ordering window is right now.

Sign up with Forward Parcel, get your Indian warehouse address, and place your orders this week.
